CASE STUDY: Monitoring Diesel Particulate Matter with Expotec Sensors in a Train Maintenance Shed

In response to the critical need for maintaining air quality standards within environments operating diesel engines, Euro Environmental Ltd partnered with a client operating a train maintenance shed to deploy a diesel particulate monitoring system. Utilising our PM1 particulate sensors, this initiative aimed to monitor levels of Diesel Particulate Matter (DPM) accurately and in real-time, ensuring compliance with EU air quality directives and providing ongoing reassurance to staff working in the environment.

Diesel engines, particularly in indoor spaces such as train maintenance sheds, emit DPM, a complex mixture of soot particles laden with toxic chemicals. Prolonged exposure to DPM can lead to serious health issues, prompting the EU to set stringent air quality standards. The directive stipulates that DPM levels should not exceed 0.05 micrograms per cubic meter (μg/m^3) over an 8-hour time-weighted average (8hr TWA).

The Challenge

Monitoring and managing DPM levels within the train maintenance shed, where diesel locomotives run their engines for short periods nightly, posed significant challenges. The client required a solution to identify peak DPM emission periods, identify the locomotives contributing most to the pollution, and ensure compliance with EU directives.

Solution Implementation

Expotec's state-of-the-art PM1 particulate sensors were deployed throughout the carriage shed. These sensors are uniquely capable of measuring PM1 levels, providing data every 5 minutes. This capability is particularly relevant for DPM monitoring, as research indicates that 90% of diesel emission particles are less than 1 micron in size therefore PM1 monitoring provides a direct indication of diesel fume levels. 

Live data in a simplified traffic light status display can be easily accessed using the Expotec portal and was proven to be very effective when displayed within the carriage shed so that all site personal could be reassured that DPM levels were at safe levels or take preventative action if elevated levels were detected.

The sensors are discreet, 5G-enabled, and networked to transmit data to an online portal managed by Expotec. This setup allows for real-time monitoring and analysis of particulate levels, offering both instantaneous readings and 8hr TWA comparisons against EU standards.

Results and Findings

Throughout the monitoring period, the system identified several instances where DPM levels peaked above 100 μg/m^3 due to locomotives entering, leaving, or idling within the shed. However, the overall 8hr TWA remained consistently below 50% of the EU threshold for PM1, showcasing the effectiveness of the monitoring system in managing and mitigating DPM exposure.

The precise measurement of PM1 levels by Expotec sensors provided focused insights into DPM concentrations, directly addressing the predominant size range of diesel emission particles. The deployment also enabled the client to pinpoint peak emission periods, identify the highest contributing locomotives, and establish alerts for real-time management of DPM levels.
